Client Query - Import says headings are missing but they are on my file

Question/Problem

I am trying to import data and I am getting errors stating that columns are missing although they are on my file. What is going on?

Resolution/Solution

This usually occurs on import files that were created on an Apple device, however, it can occur on any device so we have separated the solutions below.

The actual problem is the encoding format of the file is not UTF-8 as required by KCC, so that is addressed below.

Apple Devices

  1. Open your file in TextEdit.
  2. Open Preferences by pressing and , together.
  3. Select the Open and Save.
  4. In the Plain Text Encoding section, set the Saving Files dropdown menu to UTF-8.

  5. Save these settings.
    1. The exact method of doing this depends on your version of MacOS or IOS.
  6. Save the file.
  7. Try importing your file again.
    1. If this fails, please send the file you are using to training@khaoscloud.com and one of the Training Team will be able to assist.

Windows Devices

Although rare, windows computers can occasionally save in a different encoding format to that needed, but this depends on the software you were using to create your file.
  1. Open your file in Notepad.
  2. At the bottom right of the window, the current encoding type is displayed.

    1. If this is UTF-8, copy and paste the contents of the file in to a new text document then try to import again.
      1. If this import also fails, please send the file you are using to training@khaoscloud.com and one of the Training Team will be able to assist.
    2. If this is not UTF-8, continue to step 3.
  3. Click File and select Save As.
  4. In the Encoding dropdown menu, select UTF-8.
  5. Click Save.
  6. Try importing your file again.
    1. If this fails, please send the file you are using to training@khaoscloud.com and one of the Training Team will be able to assist.

Linux Devices

Linux devices may occasionally have this issue but due to the large number of distros available we are unable to provide exact instructions on how to resolve the issue. That said, at the time of writing both Gedit (version 40.1) and Kate (version 21.08.0) saved using an encoding format of UTF-8 by default and their files therefore are deemed compatible for Khaos Control Cloud imports.
